l'Escala is an area that has a lot to offer for those who are interested in both the sun and beaches but also of the nature and wildlife together with ancient history.
At the "town square" (Placa de la Sardana) there are numerous restaurants and pubs with local food and a magnificent view of the sea. There is also a liveguard on duty which make the beach suitable for families with children.
A little further walk along the sea there are more beaches, restaurants and views until you reach the ancient town of Empuries that is now a museum.
In the southern part of l'Escala you have the towns longest and biggest beach together with outdoor restaurants and shops. Here is also the marina where you can rent different types of boats.
As Costa Brava is known for its many diving opportunities in the Mediterranean sea, the dive centers by the marina can offer boat- and divingtrips out to the marine park Medes islands outside of l'Escala.
South of the marina you have the possibility to go hiking or mountain biking in the park, where cars are prohibited.
For guests with Skimo or alpine interests, the Pyrenees are only about 140 km away to the west. Here you will find mountain tops at 2500 m and with 1000 m vertical drop.
Ampurias, also known as Empúries, was founded in 575 B.C. by greek colonists from Phocaea as a trading post on the coast of Costa Brava. They namned it Emporion, meaning "trading place".
